Anthropic Rolls Out Identity Verification for Some Claude Users

The company confirms a new, limited verification system — powered by third-party partner Persona — triggered only for specific use cases, not applied to all accounts.

Anthropic has quietly introduced an identity verification step for Claude users, the company confirmed this week via an updated entry in its official Help Centre. The rollout is targeted and incremental: users will only encounter a verification prompt when accessing certain features, during routine platform integrity checks, or in connection with other safety and compliance measures — not as a blanket requirement for all Claude accounts.

The move marks a notable step for the San Francisco-based AI safety company, which has until now relied on standard account registration rather than document-level identity checks. Anthropic framed the change as a tool for preventing abuse, enforcing usage policies, and meeting legal obligations.

“Being responsible with powerful technology starts with knowing who is using it.”

— Anthropic, Claude Help Centre, April 2026

What the Verification Process Involves

When triggered, the verification flow asks users to supply a valid, physical government-issued photo ID — such as a passport, national identity card, or driver’s licence — and to complete a live selfie via a phone or webcam camera. The entire process is designed to take under five minutes.

Accepted & Rejected ID Types at a Glance
  • Passports, national identity cards, and driver’s licences are accepted
  • Physical originals only — photocopies, scans, and screenshots are not accepted
  • Digital or mobile IDs (e.g. mobile driver’s licences) are not accepted
  • Non-government IDs — student cards, employee badges, bank cards — are not accepted
  • Temporary paper IDs are not accepted

The Role of Persona

Anthropic has selected Persona Identities as its verification partner, citing the company’s technology, privacy controls, and security safeguards. Persona is an established identity infrastructure provider that also works with other major technology platforms.

Under the arrangement, ID images and selfies are stored on Persona’s systems rather than Anthropic’s own servers. Anthropic retains the ability to access verification records through Persona’s platform in limited circumstances — for example, when reviewing an account appeal. All data is encrypted in transit and at rest.

Anthropic has placed contractual restrictions on how Persona may use the data: solely to provide and support the verification service, and to improve Persona’s own fraud-prevention capabilities. Persona is prohibited from using the data for marketing, advertising, or any unrelated commercial purpose, and is required to delete it in accordance with retention schedules set by Anthropic and applicable law.

What Anthropic Says It Will Not Do

The company was explicit about the boundaries of the programme in its Help Centre documentation. Verification data will not be used to train Claude models. Anthropic states it is collecting only the minimum information necessary to confirm a user’s identity, and that the data will not be shared with third parties except where legally compelled.

Account Bans: What Can Still Trigger Them

Completing verification does not guarantee an account will remain in good standing. Anthropic listed four categories of behaviour that can still result in a ban, even after successful identity verification:

Reasons an Account May Still Be Banned After Verification
  • Repeated violations of Anthropic’s Usage Policy
  • Account creation from an unsupported country or region
  • Violations of the Terms of Service
  • Use by someone under the age of 18

Users who believe their account has been wrongly suspended can submit an appeal through Anthropic’s Safeguards team using a dedicated form linked from the Help Centre article.

Context: Why Now?

The rollout places Anthropic alongside a growing list of technology platforms that have introduced Know Your Customer (KYC)-style verification, a practice long common in financial services that has gradually migrated into higher-stakes consumer technology. Competitor OpenAI has introduced its own identity steps for certain ChatGPT features in recent periods.

For Anthropic, the timing coincides with a period in which AI platforms are under increasing scrutiny from regulators in the United States, European Union, and elsewhere, with identity and age-verification requirements a focal point of ongoing legislative debate.

Editorial Note — Misinformation Circulating Online

Some commentary circulating on social media and in third-party newsletters has characterised this change as a universal, mandatory requirement affecting all Claude users, accompanied by claims that account bans are now imminent for the general user base. This characterisation is inaccurate. According to Anthropic’s official documentation, verification is triggered selectively — not applied to every account — and the programme is consistent with standard compliance practices used widely across the technology industry. Readers are encouraged to consult Anthropic’s Help Centre directly for authoritative details.

What to Do If You Are Prompted to Verify

If you encounter a verification prompt, Anthropic recommends having a physical government-issued ID ready and using a device with a working camera in good lighting. If your first attempt fails — due to a blurry photo or technical issue — multiple retries are permitted within the same verification session. Users who exhaust their attempts can contact Anthropic via a support form for manual review.

For users who wish to integrate Claude programmatically into third-party software or services, Anthropic’s official guidance has not changed: such use cases should be handled through the Claude API, the Claude Console, or a supported cloud partner — not through a personal subscription plan.
