Google released its monthly software updates for Android and Pixel devices on May 5, 2026, delivering a focused but important package of security patches and quality-of-life fixes. The rollout covers all supported Pixel hardware from the Pixel 7a through the Pixel 10 series, with all eligible devices landing on build CP1A.260505.005.

Android Security Bulletin — May 2026

The centerpiece of this month’s Android Security Bulletin is a single, high-severity vulnerability in the Android System component. Unlike some previous months that catalogued dozens of CVEs, the May 2026 bulletin is notably focused in scope.

Critical Vulnerability — May 2026 Android Security Bulletin

CVE-2026-0073  Critical · RCE

This critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability resides in the Android System component, specifically in the Android Debug Bridge Daemon (adbd) subcomponent under Project Mainline. An attacker on the same local network or in close physical proximity can exploit this flaw to gain remote shell access to a target device — with no user interaction and no additional execution privileges required. Affected Android versions include Android 14, 15, 16, and 16-QPR2.

Because the vulnerable adbd component is part of Project Mainline, Google can push targeted fixes directly through Google Play system updates on devices running Android 10 or later, bypassing traditional carrier approval timelines. Devices updated to security patch level 2026-05-01 or later are fully protected.

The May 2026 bulletin has two security patch levels (2026-05-01 and 2026-05-05) to give Android partners flexibility in how they bundle fixes. There are no known indications of active exploitation of CVE-2026-0073 in the wild at the time of publication.

The attack requires no user interaction and no elevated privileges — making prompt installation of this update especially important.

Pixel Update Bulletin — May 2026

Beyond the Android-wide security patch, the Pixel Update Bulletin confirms that no additional Pixel-specific security vulnerabilities were addressed this month. The Pixel fixes are entirely functional in nature — five targeted bug repairs that tackle issues users have reported over recent weeks.

Pixel Bug Fixes & Functional Improvements

All fixes apply “under specific conditions” per Google’s bulletin.

Wireless Charging Speed Fixed an issue where wireless charging speed slowed down noticeably between 75% and 80% battery level, affecting overnight desk-charging routines across multiple Pixel generations.

Camera App Freeze During Video Recording Fixed an issue where adjusting the zoom level during video recording could cause the camera application to freeze, particularly impactful for content creators capturing live events.

Important Note for Pixel 10 Series Owners

⚠ Bootloader Anti-Rollback Warning The May 2026 update for the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, and 10 Pro Fold includes a bootloader update that increments the anti-rollback version. Once this update is installed, users will no longer be able to flash and boot older Android 16 builds on these devices. Advanced users who manually flash factory images should take note before installing.

How to Install

The update is rolling out over-the-air in phases over the next several weeks. To check for the update manually, go to Settings → System → Software updates → System update. The update weighs approximately 66 MB and can be downloaded quickly on any Wi-Fi or mobile data connection.

For users who want to install immediately, factory images and OTA files are available on the Google Developer site for manual flashing. The security patch string for fully updated devices is 2026-05-05 or later.
