SteamOS 3.8.10 Stable Released: Arch Updated, Steam Machine Support, Wayland Desktop Default

Valve has pushed SteamOS 3.8.10 to the stable channel, succeeding SteamOS 3.7 and bringing the largest set of platform changes the Steam Deck has seen in some time — alongside the first official software support for the upcoming Steam Machine.

Valve released SteamOS 3.8.10 to the stable channel on June 17–18, 2026, moving the 3.8 branch out of beta and preview testing after several pre-release builds. The update replaces SteamOS 3.7 and rolls in every change accumulated across the 3.8 beta cycle, touching the underlying Linux base, the desktop environment, the kernel, and hardware compatibility across both Valve’s own devices and a long list of third-party handhelds.

Updated Arch Base, Plasma 6.4, and Wayland by Default

SteamOS’s underlying Arch Linux base has been refreshed with newer packages across the board. The Desktop Mode environment moves up from KDE Plasma 6.2 to Plasma 6.4, and Wayland is now the default display protocol for the desktop session, with X11 still available as a fallback for users who need it. The default kernel has also been bumped to Linux 6.16, and the update introduces a newer graphics driver aimed at performance and stability.

The move to Plasma 6.4 and Wayland brings practical desktop improvements, including support for external HDR and VRR displays, per-display scaling, better TV scaling behavior, and improved handling of rotated displays.

Notably: Valve has also added support for the LAVD CPU scheduler, expanding scheduling options aimed at improving responsiveness during gaming workloads.

Initial Steam Machine Support

The most closely watched item in the release notes is initial software support for Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine hardware. Valve has not disclosed specifications, pricing, or a launch date for the device, but its inclusion in a stable SteamOS build signals that platform-level preparation is well underway. The Steam Controller has also received improvements as part of this update, including the ability to wake a connected system from sleep — a feature likely aimed at living-room setups where the Steam Machine is expected to live.

Steam Deck and Handheld Compatibility

Steam Deck owners get new BIOS updates for both hardware revisions — LCD BIOS v133 and OLED BIOS v114 — along with fixes for seamless boot issues on newer AMD hardware, including boot fixes and color control support on Ryzen Z2 Extreme and newer AMD APUs.

Valve has also broadened compatibility with third-party handhelds, listing improvements or fixes for devices including the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, Lenovo Legion Go, Legion Go S and Legion Go 2, MSI Claw series models, OneXPlayer F1/X1/APEX, GPD Win 5 and Win Mini, Anbernic Win600, OrangePi NEO, and Zotac’s OLED handhelds. The update additionally adds early firmware support for upcoming Intel-based handhelds and improves gyro handling on devices using AccelGyro3D.

Display, Audio, and Game Mode Improvements

On the multimedia side, SteamOS 3.8.10 improves screen casting support in Game Mode for tools like OBS and Discord, adds preliminary support for HDMI VRR on devices with native HDMI output, improves VRR frame pacing, and includes general audio improvements. Valve also says future OS updates should install substantially faster on high-speed internet connections.

The release additionally fixes a range of stability issues, including a possible session crash tied to certain Game Recording settings, incorrect window positioning in specific titles, and crashes that could occur when closing certain games such as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Starfield.

Good to know: SteamOS remains an immutable system, so deep customizations still require workarounds such as Distrobox. Users running Decky Loader or other third-party plugins may want to wait briefly before updating, since major OS revisions can temporarily break compatibility with those tools.
