Windows 10/11 turns off virtualization security features: game performance soars by up to 37.7%.
When Windows 11 was released, Microsoft enabled the two functions of virtualization-based security (VBS) and Hypervisor mandatory code consistency inspection (HVCI) by default , which caused a lot of controversy.
Many people worried about whether they would affect performance.
Recently, Windows 10 also seems to start turning on VBS by default.
To this end, Tom’s Haredware specially made a comparison test to see if VBS really affects the game performance.
The test system is the latest version of Windows 11 64-bit Professional Edition. The hardware configuration includes: i9-13900K, RTX 4090 (driver version 528.49), MSI MEG Z790ACE, Zhiqi Trident Z5 DDR5-6600 16GB x 2, Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus-G 4TB.
A total of 15 games were tested, including 6 ray chases, 6 DX12, 2 DX11, and 1 Vulkan. Each game tested 1080p medium quality, 1080 high quality, 2K high quality, and 4K high quality. Grade, examine the average frame rate, 1% of the lowest frame two indicators.
The results are quite astonishing, a total of 120 sets of comparative data, as many as 118 sets of data have been improved after turning off VBS , and the only two declines are only 0.1%, 0.2% , which is completely an error.
On average for 15 games, after the VBS is turned off, the average frame rate increases by 2.1% in 4K, and 5.3% in 1080p image quality, that is, the lower the resolution, the lower the image quality, the greater the difference, and the change exceeds 5%. There are as many as 26 groups.
Among them, “Microsoft Flight Simulation” has improved by 11.2% in 1080p low quality, which is the most influential , and the other three groups of settings have also increased by about 9%.
The change in the lowest frame rate of 1% is even greater, ranging from 4.9% to 8.7% under different resolutions, but there is no linear relationship with resolution and image quality, and the 2K high-quality image is the most prominent.
There are as many as 33 groups with a change range of more than 5%, and 13 of them are more than 10%. For example, in the four cases of “Microsoft Flight Simulation”, the improvement is 12.4% at most, and the maximum is 15.5%.
The most exaggerated is “Total War: Warhammer 3”, the improvement in 1080p high-definition has reached an exaggerated 37.7%, and 28.6% in 2K high-definition!
So, if you are a gamer, it is best to turn off VBS manually, and the method is very simple.
Just find and open the Windows terminal (administrator) in the start menu, enter the following command and press Enter, and then restart the computer:
bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

How to check if virtualization based security is turned on? It’s just as simple, use the Win+R shortcut key to open the “Run” window, enter ” msinfo32 “, and you can find it.
