Amazon Linux 2023 builds on Amazon Linux 2 with many updates, further security enhancements, and other quality improvements for Amazon Web Services customers.

Amazon Linux 2023 also features boot speed optimizations, SELinux is enabled by default, uses OpenSSL 3, XFS is the root filesystem, and has many package updates, including updates to the default compiler toolchain.

Amazon Linux 2023 is now available in all AWS regions. Going forward, AWS intends to release major Amazon Linux updates every two years.

Announcing Amazon Linux 2023

Posted On: Mar 15, 2023

Today, we are announcing the general availability of Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023), our new Linux-based operating system for AWS that is designed to provide a secure, stable, high-performance environment to develop and run your cloud applications. AL2023 provides seamless integration with various AWS services and development tools and offers optimized performance for Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) Graviton-based instances and AWS Support at no additional licensing cost. Starting with AL2023, a new Amazon Linux major release will be available every 2 years. This cadence provides you with a more predictable release cycle and up to 5 years of support, making it easier for you to plan your upgrades.

AL2023 offers several improvements over Amazon Linux 2 (AL2). For example, AL2023 takes a security-by-default approach to help improve your security posture with preconfigured security policies, SELinux in permissive mode and IMDSv2 enabled by default, and the availability of kernel live patching. With deterministic upgrades through versioned repositories, you can lock to a specific version of the Amazon Linux package repository, giving you control over how and when you absorb updates. With this capability, you can adhere to operational best practices more efficiently by ensuring consistency between package versions and updates across your environment. For a full comparison, see Comparing Amazon Linux 2 and Amazon Linux 2023.

Amazon Linux 2023 is generally available in all AWS Regions, including the AWS GovCloud (US) and the China Regions. To learn more about Amazon Linux 2023, see the AWS documentation

What is Amazon Linux?

Amazon Linux is a Linux distribution that is designed and maintained by Amazon Web Services (AWS).
It is based on the Fedora and Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating systems, and is optimized for use in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud environment.
Amazon Linux is provided as a free, open-source operating system, and it is designed to work seamlessly with other AWS services such as EC2, S3, and RDS.

One of the key benefits of Amazon Linux is its performance and stability in the cloud environment.

It is optimized for running on AWS, and includes a number of features that make it well-suited for cloud-based applications, such as a minimal footprint, support for the latest AWS services, and automatic security updates.

Amazon Linux also includes a number of developer tools and software packages, such as the Apache web server, PHP, Python, and Ruby, making it a popular choice for building and deploying web applications on AWS.

Additionally, Amazon Linux includes support for the Docker container platform, allowing developers to easily deploy and manage containerized applications on AWS.

What are the advantages of Amazon Linux over other Linux like Ubuntu, Debian…?

Amazon Linux has a number of advantages over other Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Debian, especially when it comes to running in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud environment.

Some of the key advantages of Amazon Linux include:
  1. AWS Integration: Amazon Linux is specifically designed to work seamlessly with other AWS services, such as EC2, S3, and RDS. It includes a number of tools and features that are optimized for use in the AWS cloud, such as the AWS command-line interface (CLI) and the AWS software development kit (SDK).

  2. Performance: Amazon Linux is optimized for performance in the cloud environment. It includes a minimal set of packages, which results in faster boot times and reduced memory usage compared to other Linux distributions.

  3. Security: Amazon Linux is designed to be secure by default. It includes automatic security updates, and is built with security features like SELinux (Security-Enhanced Linux) and SecComp (Secure Computing Mode) enabled by default.

  4. Support: Amazon Linux is backed by AWS, which provides support for the operating system as well as other AWS services. This means that users can get help and support directly from AWS, rather than relying on community support.

  5. Compatibility: Amazon Linux is based on the same codebase as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), which means that it is compatible with RHEL packages and tools. This makes it easier to migrate applications between Amazon Linux and RHEL-based systems.

While other Linux distributions like Ubuntu and Debian have their own strengths and advantages, Amazon Linux is particularly well-suited for running in the AWS cloud environment.
