Firefox 145 Released: Drops 32-bit Linux Support and Advances Anti-Fingerprinting Protection

Mozilla has released Firefox 145 stable version on November 11, 2025, marking significant changes in platform support and privacy protection capabilities.

End of 32-bit Linux Support

The most notable change in Firefox 145 is the discontinuation of support for 32-bit Linux systems. Mozilla explained that as the vast majority of Linux distributions no longer widely support 32-bit environments, maintaining Firefox for this platform has become increasingly difficult and unreliable.

To concentrate resources on delivering the highest quality and most modern browsing experience, the team has decided to terminate builds and updates for the 32-bit Linux version. Users still on 32-bit systems are strongly encouraged to upgrade to 64-bit operating systems and the corresponding Firefox version.

Enhanced PDF Functionality

Firefox 145 significantly improves PDF document interaction capabilities. Users can now add, edit, and delete comments directly on PDF files opened in the browser, making it convenient to record summaries, questions, or tasks on the fly.

A newly added comment sidebar helps users quickly browse all annotations and jump to corresponding locations with a single click—particularly efficient for handling lengthy or heavily annotated PDF documents.

User Interface Improvements

The update optimizes tab group interaction. Users can now simply hover over a tab group name to see preview thumbnails of tabs within the group, without needing to click to open it.

Firefox 145 also adds an option in “General > Tabs” settings to “Open links from applications next to the active tab.” The right-click menu function for “Copy Link to Highlight” has been updated, supporting more flexible selection of any webpage content to generate shareable links.

Developer Updates

For web developers, Firefox 145 brings important updates including support for the Atomics.waitAsync proposal, which allows thread synchronization based on shared memory location values. The browser now also supports the new Integrity-Policy HTTP header for enforcing script subresource integrity.

Phase Two of Anti-Fingerprinting Protection

The most significant privacy enhancement in Firefox 145 is the introduction of second-phase anti-fingerprinting defenses, further reducing users’ risk of being identified and tracked online.

Understanding Digital Fingerprinting

Digital fingerprinting is an advanced tracking technique that collects subtle device information—such as operating system, screen resolution, installed fonts, timezone, and even graphics card rendering behavior—to create a unique digital signature for each user. Websites can use this signature to identify and track browsing activities across platforms and time periods, even when users have disabled cookies or use private browsing mode.

From Phase One to Phase Two

Mozilla began implementing anti-fingerprinting protection in 2021 with “Phase One Protection.” These measures successfully reduced the percentage of users who could be uniquely tracked from a baseline of 65% to approximately 35% by blocking known tracking scripts and interfering with graphics rendering and mathematical calculations.

Now, with Phase Two Protection officially deployed, Mozilla aims to further obscure device information and make user profiles more ambiguous. Specific Phase Two measures include:

  • Canvas fingerprinting protection: Adding random noise only when websites read background images, without affecting normal display
  • Font enumeration limits: Using only standard operating system fonts and blocking local fonts (except for essential language fonts)
  • Touch support standardization: Reporting multi-touch support uniformly as 0, 1, or 5 touch points
  • Screen height obfuscation: Reporting available screen height as actual height minus 48 pixels
  • CPU core standardization: Always reporting processor core count as 2

These new measures have reduced the uniquely identifiable user rate to just 20%, significantly enhancing privacy protection levels.

Gradual Rollout Strategy

This new functionality is initially enabled only in Private Browsing Mode and Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) Strict Mode. After completing testing and optimization, it will be promoted as Firefox’s default setting.

Mozilla explained that more aggressive blocking strategies cannot be adopted because they might break the normal functionality of websites that rely on real device data, such as online productivity tools. The team is seeking a balance between enhancing privacy protection and ensuring website usability. If users encounter website compatibility issues due to the new features, Firefox provides an option to manually disable the protection on specific sites.

Firefox 145 is available for download now at Mozilla’s official FTP server, representing another step forward in the browser’s ongoing commitment to user privacy and modern web standards.
