Linux Mint 21.3 Beta Released with Cinnamon 6.0 and Initial Wayland Support.
On December 9th, the Linux Mint team released the Linux Mint 21.3 Beta ISO image, with plans for the official version to be launched this Christmas.
Code-named “Virginia,” Linux Mint 21.3 features an upgrade to version 6.0 of the Cinnamon desktop environment among its three officially supported desktop environments. Notably, Cinnamon now has preliminary support for Wayland.
In the latest Cinnamon 6.0 release, experimental support for “Cinnamon on Wayland” session has been introduced, marking an initial step towards Wayland compatibility. However, it’s important to note that the default remains Xorg Server.
Clement Lefebvre, the project leader of Linux Mint, anticipates ongoing refinement of Wayland support until 2026, with comprehensive Wayland support expected in version 23.x.

Beyond the experimental Wayland support, the Linux Mint 21.3 Beta with Cinnamon 6.0 brings various enhancements, including right-click menu support for download-related actions in the Nemo file manager.
Cinnamon 6.0 introduces updated sound and power applets, support for AVIF images, new gestures for desktop scaling, color picker support in the screenshot service, a new menu details option, xdg-portal configuration files, and various other improvements.
