News on December 8, Samsung has explicitly stated that it will gradually cease the production of lithium-ion batteries.

This decision comes as its subsidiary is actively developing solid-state batteries, aiming for the comprehensive application of this new technology in the coming years.

The initial batch of solid-state batteries manufactured by Samsung is expected to be deployed first in electric vehicles, followed by integration into smartphones and tablets.

Through this initiative, Samsung aims to avoid a repeat of the unfortunate incidents experienced with the Note 7.

 

In the current industry landscape, although solid-state battery technology has been in existence for some time, the challenge lies in the inability to scale up production to meet the demands of millions.

 

Preventing a repeat of the Note 7 incidents! Samsung will abandon lithium batteries, with the first batch of solid-state batteries underway.

 

Solid-state batteries use solid materials to transmit energy, thereby enhancing performance and safety. Compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries, these batteries also boast a higher energy density.

 

Samsung SDI is actively working on developing solid-state batteries with an energy density exceeding 900 Wh/L.

The company aims to achieve this goal by adopting sulfide-based technology, which provides the fastest lithium-ion flow per unit volume.

 


What are Solid-State Batteries?

 
Solid-state batteries are a type of battery technology that uses solid electrodes and a solid electrolyte instead of the liquid or gel-like electrolytes found in traditional lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries.
 
In conventional batteries, ions move between the positive and negative electrodes through a liquid or gel electrolyte, but in solid-state batteries, this electrolyte is replaced with a solid material.

Key characteristics of solid-state batteries include:

  1. Safety: Solid-state batteries are considered safer than traditional batteries because they are less prone to issues like leakage or combustion. The solid electrolyte reduces the risk of thermal runaway reactions.

  2. Energy Density: Solid-state batteries have the potential for higher energy density, meaning they can store more energy in a smaller and lighter package. This can lead to longer-lasting and more efficient batteries.

  3. Performance: Solid-state batteries can potentially offer faster charging and discharging rates. The solid electrolyte allows for quicker ion movement, improving overall performance.

  4. Longevity: These batteries may have a longer cycle life compared to traditional batteries, meaning they can withstand more charge and discharge cycles before their capacity significantly degrades.

  5. Temperature Range: Solid-state batteries are often more stable across a wider range of temperatures compared to traditional batteries, making them suitable for various applications and environments.

 

Despite these advantages, solid-state batteries face challenges in terms of manufacturing complexity and cost.

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, researchers and companies are actively working to overcome these challenges and bring solid-state batteries to commercial viability for use in electric vehicles, portable electronics, and other applications.

Advances in this technology could have significant implications for the future of energy storage and electric transportation.
