Zorin OS 18.1 Lite:
A Second Life for Old PCs
The long-awaited lightweight edition returns — bringing a modern Linux desktop to aging hardware, just as Windows 10 reaches end of life.
Why Lite, and why now?
When Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would reach end of life in October 2025, millions of users found themselves at a crossroads. Many of their machines cannot meet the strict hardware requirements of Windows 11 — particularly the TPM 2.0 chip requirement — leaving them stranded on an unsupported OS.
Zorin OS has long positioned itself as the most approachable Linux alternative for Windows refugees. With the 18.1 release, the team has revived its Lite edition — a purpose-built variant for older and lower-spec computers — at precisely the right moment.
“Zorin OS 18.1 Lite is aimed at old and lower-spec computers — our edition intended to breathe new life into aging hardware without the licensing costs or stricter hardware requirements of Windows 11.”
What is Zorin OS 18.1 Lite?
Lite is a distinct edition of Zorin OS that swaps out the GNOME Shell desktop found in the standard version for the Xfce desktop environment — a time-tested, lightweight interface known for its efficiency and low resource consumption. The result is a system that feels snappy on hardware that would grind under modern GNOME.
Both editions share the same solid Ubuntu 24.04 LTS foundation, the same Linux 6.17 kernel, and the same long-term support commitment through June 2029. The difference is entirely in the desktop layer and its resource demands.
| Base system | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS |

What’s new in this release
Lite last appeared in the Zorin OS 17.x series. Its return in 18.1 brings a raft of meaningful updates — this is not a simple port but a genuinely improved edition.
Xfce 4.20 desktop
The latest upstream release with performance improvements, better HiDPI support, and a more polished experience overall.
Redesigned file manager
A streamlined interface that surfaces the most useful actions in a compact layout — ideal for smaller or lower-resolution displays.
Fingerprint reader support
Enroll fingerprints for login and authentication directly from a new “Fingerprints” section in the Settings app — no extra setup needed.
Web Apps tool
Turn any website into a desktop app with its own icon and menu entry — making cloud services feel like native applications.
Refreshed themes
A more rounded default theme with softer colors, slightly darker panels, and new yellow and brown color options for personalization.
Modern hardware drivers
Linux 6.17 delivers improved support for NVIDIA, Intel Xe3, and AMD hybrid GPUs — even on machines that are a few years old.
Lite vs. standard: which should you choose?
Zorin OS 18.1 Lite
- ✓ Runs well on older/low-spec hardware
- ✓ Xfce — fast and resource-light
- ✓ Free to download
- ✓ Supported until June 2029
- ✗ No Advanced Window Tiling
- ✗ Sunset after Zorin OS 18 series
Zorin OS 18.1 (standard)
- ✓ GNOME Shell — modern and feature-rich
- ✓ Advanced Window Tiling
- ✓ Pro edition with extra layouts
- ✓ Ongoing development beyond v18
- ✗ Higher RAM and CPU requirements
- ✗ Pro version costs ~£48
In short: if your machine is from around 2012–2018 and feels sluggish, Lite is your best option. If you have a reasonably modern computer and want the full Zorin experience, go with the standard Core edition.
Upgrading and downloading
Zorin OS 18.1 Lite is a free download for 64-bit Intel/AMD machines. If you’re already running Zorin OS 17.3 Lite, you can upgrade directly using the built-in Upgrade Zorin OS app — no need to wipe your files and start fresh.
New users can download the ISO from the official Zorin OS website and flash it to a USB drive using a tool like Rufus or Etcher. Installation is guided and designed to be approachable for users making their first move from Windows.
The bigger picture
Zorin OS 18.1 Lite arrives at a uniquely important moment in PC history. Hundreds of millions of Windows 10 machines have been cut off from Microsoft’s upgrade path. Rather than sending functional hardware to landfill, Lite offers a dignified alternative — a free, secure, modern operating system that breathes new life into computers that still have years of use ahead of them.
For schools, small businesses, and home users on a budget, that is not a small thing. It is, arguably, exactly the kind of computing that matters most.
